In the end, young Shanjeyen Mariampilla was exactly where cops thought he might be – enjoying his favourite pastime, riding the subway. The 13-year-old, who had been the object of all day search by authorities and his family, was located safe and well Thursday night at the Kennedy subway station.
It was a long way from his Earl and Sherbourne Street home, a place his family had just moved into three days earlier. Concern grew for the youngster with Down syndrome because he has the mental capacity of a six-year-old. Investigators worried he didn’t know the area and was lost, and as sunshine turned to darkness, fears grew.
Cops set up a command post around his home and issued a description of the lad and his clothing, hoping someone would find him. And someone did, with his discovery on the TTC just after the dinner hour. It’s not clear where else he might have gone during his adventure but he was reunited with his relieved family in the evening. And despite being away since 8:30am, he didn’t seem any the worse for wear.
