Police Cameras To Be Installed At Three More Intersections

They’re the eyes in the Entertainment District, and they’ve been posted in other problem areas of the city – now three more intersections will be fitted with police cameras in the hopes of curbing crime.

Toronto Police are installing six more closed circuit security cameras at three spots where it’s believed crime has been on the rise. The corners being targeted in this round: Sherbourne and Dundas, Sherbourne and Queen, and George and Gerrard near Dundas, all east of Yonge St.

Officers have reportedly seen an increase in drug deals and prostitution in those spots of the city.

The installation, which will go up at the end of the month and be activated on Halloween, is part of a $2 million pilot project running until next April.

“I believe CCTV cameras can be an excellent addition to our ongoing efforts to protect public safety in Toronto. They act as a deterrent to those considering committing crime. They can provide excellent evidence should people choose to commit crime,” said Toronto Police Staff Supt. Jeff McGuire.

“We are committed to working closely with the communities of this city to provide the most effective technology, in addition to the efforts of our dedicated men and women, to protect public safety.”

Five cameras are already monitoring activity in the club district, and other target areas that have received cameras include Malvern, and the corner of Victoria Park and Finch.

Reaction is always varied to the eyes in the sky, with some saying it’s a deterrent to crime and others complaining it’s an invasion of privacy.
