Last week we told you about a gruesome case of what appeared to be murder and cannibalism unfolding in Mexico City (left). Now the story has taken yet another grim twist. Authorities in the metropolis south of the border have done DNA tests on the body parts found in the apartment where Jose Luis Calva lived. They reveal the remains were human and police believe they may have come from his missing 32-year-old girlfriend.
When Alejandra Galeana didn’t come home last week, her worried family contacted detectives. They went to Calva’s residence and discovered the appalling scene, which included a leg in a fridge, bones in a cereal box and a torso in his closet. Cops also found something equally disturbing – flesh on a plate and a frying pan. They now allege their suspect sampled at least some of that disgusting dish. “That is the assumption that exists,” confirms prosecutor Gustavo Romulo Salas.
Investigators believe Galeana had been strangled and dismembered.
The 40-year-old is said to be a would-be horror writer, and a copy of an unfinished manuscript called “Cannibalistic Instincts” was discovered among his possessions. An anonymous witness claims he’s always been fascinated by witchcraft and sadistic literature. Another girlfriend recalls him as a man who came on smiling and charming, quoting poetry to win her over. But she says that soon changed once they were in a relationship, accusing him of becoming jealous, obsessive and controlling.
He’s facing a homicide charge and detectives want to talk to him about two other cases of dismembered female bodies that were discovered in 2004 and 2007. But so far they haven’t been able to say much to their main suspect. He remains in hospital after trying to elude authorities by swinging down from several sets of balconies from his upper floor apartment and suffering head injuries.
