Pedestrian Countdown Signals Are Lifesavers. Is There One Coming To Your Corner?

Fewer pedestrians are losing their lives on our city’s streets thanks to the countdown timers that tell you when the light is about to change.

“I think people tend to ignore the hand, but they look at the number,” said pedestrian Jennifer Barreca.

At this time last year, 25 pedestrians were struck and killed in Toronto. So far this year there’s only been 15 fatalities, a record low.

Although you can trust these high-tech signals, experts say you should mostly rely on common sense. “The signals are really great for both pedestrians and drivers because they can actually see for themselves how much time they have to get across the street,” said Joanne Banfield, Manager of Trauma Injury Prevention at Sunnybrook.

Seniors account for the most incidents. Safety experts recommend crossing if the countdown signal is at seven or over. If it’s at four you’re better off waiting for the next green light.

The city plans to have these signals at 2,000 intersections by 2009.
