Bob Hunter Gets New Posthumous Honour

Former CityNews reporter, activist, writer, and Greenpeace co-founder Bob Hunter travelled across the globe in a valiant bid to protect the environment.  But whether he was fighting to save whales on the high seas, or trudging through a rain forest, his heart was always at home.  And for much of his life, home was Scarborough.

On Thursday, the city honoured Hunter, who passed away in 2005, with a spot in the Scarborough Walk of Fame.

His family hopes it will inspire others to continue his fight for the environment.

“He would be thrilled that his name would be here and lasting forever and that it’s here in this community because he loved this community,” said his proud wife, Bobbi Hunter.

“Bob stood for a lot of wonderful important values and people will think about that name and they’ll know that, well, there’s hope.”

“My dad’s spent some of the best times of his life here,” adds daughter and fellow activist Emily Hunter.  “He had a great time. He loved Scarborough. It’s good to see that Scarborough’s loving him back again.”

His star joins that of another member of the CityNews family, the honourable David Onley, now the Lieutenant-Governor of Ontario.

“One of the reasons the city of Toronto is a leader today in environmental issues is because of Bob Hunter’s advocacy,” said Toronto mayor David Miller.
