All-Time Argos List Released

This article is more than 5 years old.
Their names are legendary: Dick Shatto, Hank Ilesic, Bob O’Billovich and of course, Michael “Pinball” Clemons. But there’s nary a mention of Leon McQuay. Last June, fans were asked to name the all-time Toronto Argonauts football team. Now, after months of voting and debate, the list is out.
And it contains some famous names, a few of whom weren’t really with the team for very long. Doug Flutie spent just two years crewing the Boatmen, but that was long enough to help lead them to two consecutive Grey Cup victories in 1996 and 1997. He was named all time quarterback. It comes just one day after the former Buffalo Bills‘ hero was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame.
On Friday several of the players got together to recollect, and as athletes often do, razz each other.
“They’re old and I can’t believe I played with those old guys,” joked said All-Time Defensive Back Carl Brazley. “No, it is awesome. Nothing short of awesome. You know, everybody gets busy and sometimes it’s hard to, you know, to keep up with everybody…so to come back and see the guys is just great.”
“The time I had here, particularly the 1971 team, is probably the most exciting time of my life,” adds former tight end Mel Profit.
Some players who are still with team are on the list, including slotback Derrell Mitchell and linebackers Mike O’Shea and Michael Fletcher. Clemons won, but not for coach. That belongs to O’Billovich, who’s now in the back offices of the B.C. Lions. Pinball made the list for all-time kick returner. But the 1991 Grey Cup champions have the most names on the honour role – 11 in all.
The choices will all be honoured at Saturday’s game against the Blue Bombers at the Rogers Centre.
