It started as a routine police traffic stop. It ended with a guns-drawn, high-risk takedown and two men charged with weapons-related offenses.
The OPP pulled over a Volkswagen Passat on Highway 401 just before 3am Friday because of its noisy muffler. As the driver was being questioned one officer reportedly noticed a bulge under the passenger’s sweater.
“They pulled the vehicle over (and) were speaking to the driver,” Cst. Dave Woodford of the OPP confirms. “One of the officers observed something bulky under the passenger’s sweater. He checked and saw the butt of a gun. He yelled ‘Gun.'”
Toronto Police and the Emergency Task Force were called in to provide backup as the vehicle was searched. A .22 calibre Colt handgun was seized.
The 401 was closed both ways at Warden Ave. for about 30 minutes during the probe. Two Toronto men were taken into custody and charged.
Kavell Shakes, 28, faces several weapons-related charges and was due in court Friday for a bail hearing. The driver was released and charged with traffic and liquor charges.
There were no injuries in the incident.
