Many in Leafs Nation wondered if the team’s early-season struggles might be eased by getting out on the road for a while. After Saturday night, that certainly appears to be the case.
Toronto won its second straight contest Saturday, remaining perfect on the mini road swing with a 4-1 win over the New York Rangers, a team headed in a very different direction. Toronto beat the Pittsburgh Penguins handily Thursday while New York has only three wins in 10 games.
Pavel Kubina snapped out of a slumber with his first of the season, and the goal sparked a three-marker binge in the second that put the game out of reach.
Jaromir Jagr gave the Rangers the lead early on in the second, but his goal — just the first even-strength score by New York in 230 minutes — provided a short-lived lead when Kubina evened things less than three minutes later.
John Pohl gave the Leafs their lead, and Nik Antropov provided the insurance. Chad Kilger added an empty-netter with 15 seconds left.
Toronto, which entered with the most goals in the NHL (42) and most allowed (44), was outshot badly, at one point suffering a 13-shot deficit that keeper Vesa Toskala had to combat in order to keep the team in the game while the offence napped in a scoreless first.
The Buds return home for their next contest Monday, when they’ll host the Washington Capitals at the Air Canada Centre.
