Britney Spears Attempts Comeback With New Album

Few would argue that  Britney Spears needs a break – and her new album Blackout could be it.

Due out Tuesday, Blackout is the fifth studio album from the 25-year-old pop singer, who’s been through one personal challenge after another over the past year.

Spears has had a bad year – from her partying antics, to her bizarre decision to shave hear head, to her rehab stints. There was also an awful live TV performance, an arrest, and a judge’s recent decision to award temporary custody of her two sons to ex-husband Kevin Federline, all of which was heavily publicized.

But the new disc is earning Spears some of the best reviews of her career, which could be what prompts the young star to make a turnaround. The first single Gimme More has sold well so far.

“One of the problems for Britney right now is the public is more focused on her personal life than her music. This record is an opportunity to change that,” said Rolling Stone executive editor Joe Levy, who called the album “state of the art.”

Spears’s first album .Baby One More Time sold more than 14 million copies in the U.S. and made her a superstar at the age of 16. She released three multiplatinum albums after that and had several sold-out tours. But she’s been stalled career-wise lately, partly because of her decision to have children, and partly because of her oft-questionable decisions over the past year.

Her label, Jive Records, hasn’t said much about Spears over the past year and didn’t say why the album’s release day was changed to Oct. 30 from Nov. 13. There’s also no word on how many more albums the singer has left in her contract.
