Bus Camera Helps TTC Nab 15-Yr.-Old Suspect

The T.T.C. hasn’t yet installed cameras on all its vehicles but an incident from last month now shows just how useful they can really be. Toronto Police have arrested a suspect in an incident onboard a bus that took place on October 29th. The age of the accused: just 15.

Cops allege two teens boarded a bus near Eglinton and Mt. Pleasant and refused to pay their proper fare. When the driver asked them to leave, they say one of the youths punched him in the face and then added insult to injury by throwing a carton of milk at him.

As the driver struggled to recover, both kids got off the vehicle and disappeared. But they left something behind – their faces on camera. It turns out they’d gotten on one of the buses that had the unblinking electronic eyes already installed. Cops pulled the pictures and after some investigation, allegedly traced the incident to the 15-year-old.

He’s too young to be identified but he’s been charged with assault and mischief. He’ll be in court Saturday.

The TTC is planning to install as many as 12,000 cameras on all its buses, streetcars and subway trains to increase security. The cost: $18 million. All of them are expected to be in place by June 2008.
