T.O. High School Hoops Season Underway

Central Tech and Central Commerce met last season in the final of the Citytv Jarvis Invitational and the two teams got their respective seasons underway at Tech Wednesday in a rematch some of the players had been waiting all summer and fall for.

“Obviously we’d like to go back and defend always,” said Larry Laughlin, coach of tourney champion Commerce. “We’re looking forward to that tournament and hopefully some other successes along the road.”

Central Tech coach Fred Brown admitted his team has some work to do, but remains optimistic heading into the season.

“Discipline wise I have to wonder, I look at the way they’re dressed and I don’t like that discipline,” he said. “But it’s not a fashion show, is it?”

The game was refereed by Central Tech teacher Barry Belchamber, who’s spent 39 years running up and down the sidelines and is as excited as anyone about another year.

“I’m old, I’m fat and I’m lazy,” joked Belchamber when asked why he’s still blowing the whistle. “I don’t like anybody, that’s why I referee.”

The game itself wasn’t exactly a barnburner, with Commerce taking away a 56-29 win, but both teams know it’s just Game 1 of a long season full of many more chances to put the ball in the net.
