Two Pedestrians Struck And Killed

Two pedestrians were struck and killed in the GTA on Saturday in a span of just over an hour.
Police said a 31-year-old Toronto woman died after being hit by an SUV around 6:30pm at Oswego Road and Eglinton, near McCowan. Witnesses said she was crossing the street at the time of the incident.
“She was literally struck and pulled about 50 feet on the road, and then her husband took her away to the hospital,” said neighbour Chris Kooblall.
About an hour later, a 75-year-old man was struck and killed just after 7:30pm near Martin Grove and The Westway (pictured). Apparently, the elderly man had stepped onto the road from between parked cars. He was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the van, an 81-year-old male, was taken to hospital as a precaution.
Police say there are many things people can do to avoid such tragedies.
“As a pedestrian, you have to make sure you’re in the safest position possible because that vehicle may not see you,” said Toronto Police Sgt. Keith Hanes.
He added that listening to music and talking on your cell phone can be dangerously distracting when walking on a busy street. Even something as simple as carrying an umbrella poses some safety risk because it might prevent you from seeing an oncoming vehicle.
There’s no word on any charges so far.
