Winds Leave City A Garbage Strewn Mess

In GTA neighbourhoods where garbage day was Wednesday, the streets probably looked about as messy as many of the places trash ends up.
Heavy winds battered Toronto and surrounding areas all day, and with gusts strong enough to knock down signs and snap limbs off trees, they toppled cans and scattered bags of trash strewn across lawns and roads alike.
Complicating things even further was the fact that Wednesday saw many Torontonians toss their Christmas tree to the curb, a place where they rarely stayed for long.
Of course all of the debris not only slowed traffic and frustrated residents, it also made things considerably more difficult for trash collectors trying to do their jobs.
“My jobs a lot harder with the wind,” acknowledged one sanitation worker. “It’s a touch situation because we want our job to get done as well.”
But once that job was done, another problem presented itself: empty bins, which tend travel a lot farther than they did while full of garbage.
The only solace for homeowners in the city is that the wind was expected to die down Wednesday night, making the search for displaced cans at least a little easier.
