The best high school basketball team’s in Ontario battled it out all season long until just two teams remained. The Eastern Commerce Saints faced off against Pickering in a repeat of last year’s OFSAA final on Wednesday night.
Last year Pickering took home the title, but the Saints were intent on changing that, and they were just 16 seconds away from accomplishing their goal.
But Pickering senior Devoe Joseph sunk a dramatic shot with just seconds remaining to give Pickering the win, 47-46.
It was a heartbreaking loss for the Saints, and spirit-rousing victory for the repeat champs.
“I told the team, just give me the ball, and somehow I had a dream about this,” a breathless Joseph said afterwards. “I can’t describe it. I saw my family, I looked at my mom right before.”
“This is the greatest team I’ve played with. We practiced so hard all year, I didn’t want to let them down.”
