GTA Basks In Long Awaited Warmer Weather

It says a lot about our winter that a temperature of 7C feels like a heat wave. And so it was that office workers, students, and just about anyone who could get away managed to find themselves outside on Friday afternoon, basking in readings that on any other day might be considered on the cool side.
Many emerged without heavy coats – or no coats at all – as the sun made it feel a bit warmer than it actually was. Just how hot it really got depended a lot on where you were.
Toronto reached a high of just 7C downtown, well above the norm of 4C we should have at this time of year. Pearson took off to 6C, while Mississauga made it past 8C. The hot spot in the GTA: Milton, which broke double digits at 10C.
And winter retreated even up north with Collingwood and Wiarton climbing to 9C, while North Bay basked in an unusual 7C.
Most didn’t really care about the exact readings, just that there was some sun – and for a change, not a trace of snow.
“It beats having a storm all weekend and to come out,” one weather worshipper agrees.
But the long promised and long awaited warm-up wasn’t the only gradual weather event. You may not be able to tell by all the giant snow mounds still piled up everywhere, but the higher temperatures are causing a gradual melt and it should help get rid of some of the endless piles that have created traffic dangers and reminded us all of the oppression this season has brought with it.
But here’s a word of warning – don’t get used to it.
After you enjoy another sunny and mild day on Saturday morning, reality returns for the afternoon. By Sunday, an Arctic blast moves in that will give us wind chills closer to -8.
Things recover a bit for Tuesday and Wednesday, with more normal highs of 4C accompanied by rain. And beware of next Thursday, the first day of spring. The long range outlook calls for highs of just 3C – and snow in the form of flurries.
