GTA Finally Gets Warmth – But Rain Will Wash Away Any Advantage

It seems only appropriate that the first truly warm days of our otherwise colder than normal spring will be accompanied by something that will ensure you can’t get out to enjoy them – a lot of rain.
The GTA is finally going to break out of the deep freeze for the next two days as March morphs into April, but you’ll be watching it from under an umbrella. As much as 25 millimetres of rain could fall within just a few hours, especially in the eastern and central parts of the province. That will likely leave you on the inside looking out, on a day when the high could hit around 10C.
But in the typical pretzel logic of this year, those double digits won’t come until the overnight period, when it will actually be slightly warmer than it is during the day. That’s why the so-called ‘low’ on our weather page is actually above the high, a rare combination that happens only occasionally.
It’s all due to a Colorado low that could bring heavy downpours overnight and make for some wet roads during Tuesday morning’s commute. But at least you won’t be cold. Highs are expected to touch 14C – the warmest temperatures we’ve seen this year.
The last time we got anywhere near that was on March 3rd, when the thermometer made it all the way to 12C. That was followed by a cold front 24 hours later that brought us more snow and freezing drizzle. The good news – the sun may actually peek out Tuesday afternoon, but it will be windy and get colder.
By Wednesday, the real warmth will be gone and we’ll be back down to around 5C. The norm for this time of year is 8C. The only consolation – you can put away the umbrella. It’s expected the sun will return with the cooler weather and those below normal readings will last into Friday, which looks like the best day of the week – some sun, some cloud and a high near 11C.
By the weekend, it will back to cool, with highs both days just 4C.
But there is a positive to the April showers. All that water and those high readings should finally wash away the last vestiges of our brutal winter – the high snowbanks at the side of your driveways and local street corners. And you may see the real first sign of spring this week – your long buried front and backyard lawns.
