Accident Causes Huge Backlog On 401 At Dinner Hour

It’s the kind of accident that leaves rescue crews concerned, traffic snarled and those waiting back home wondering what happened to their family member heading there for supper.

A three car pile-up just after the dinner hour Tuesday created a huge backlog of traffic on the eastbound express lanes of the 401 east of Islington. At least one car rolled over onto its roof, while another hit the guardrail. The result was instant chaos on the already busy road.

Officials were forced to close all but one lane on the highway, leaving cars backed up for kilometres and trying to squeeze by and merge into the single escape route.

Traffic was back to normal around 8pm.

There’s no word on the cause, but Toronto Fire Services and EMS crews arrived at the scene to transport the injured to hospital. Their complaints are serious but not life threatening.
