The OPP is taking speeding and aggressive driving very seriously this long weekend, putting a second police airplane in the sky to look out for dangerous behaviour on the highways.
Aside from the beefed up air patrol, every available unmarked cruiser will be put to use on the 400-series highways for the extensive safety blitz.
“The Victoria Day weekend has traditionally been deadly and that’s a tradition we want to change,” OPP Sgt. Cam Woolley said.
“This weekend we’re going to have officers on the road, marked cars, unmarked cars (and) we’re going to have officers up in the air in the aircraft – also on the water in boats.”
One of the planes will focus on the 400-series highways and the second on Highway 69. Last Victoria Day weekend, seven people were killed across the province.
Police want to remind drivers they face very stiff penalties for travelling with a lead foot. Any one caught going 50 kilometres or more above the speed limit can have their car and licence seized immediately and face a fine up to $10,000.
