In what seems to have become a dangerous long weekend tradition, a Sunday morning blaze began with a firecracker.
“It appears that someone might have fired fireworks onto the balcony,” confirmed Toronto Fire District Chief Dan Antle.
The flames then spread to the apartment at 2600 Jane Street, where they caused $50,000 worth of damage. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt.
One man who tried to fight the fire had cuts on his hand, but was otherwise fine.
The building was evacuated as crews battled the two-alarm blaze.
That’s “normal procedure in Toronto for a high-rise fire,” explained Antle. He noted that the second alarm in this case did not mean a more serious fire and that it was only sounded as a precaution. Antle added that it was only a matter of time before a fire like this happened on the Victoria Day weekend.
“There’s a very good chance that was going to happen,” he allowed.
There’s no word on suspects.
