Nearly 20 years after being jailed for a sex attack against a teenager that Paul Bernardo allegedly later confessed to, Anthony Hanemaayer wants to clear his name.
The now-40-year-old was reportedly informed by the Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted that Bernardo admitted to committing the knife point sex assault against a 15-year-old girl.
Hanemaayer, who now lives in London, Ont., was sentenced to two years less a day in 1989. He pleaded guilty to the disturbing charge for fear of being given a heavy sentence if he was convicted.
The man claims the case against him was based on a faulty eyewitness ID made by the victim’s mother.
According to a published report, Bernardo admitted to police in 2006 that he attacked the young woman. Officials believe the notorious killer was telling the truth because he recounted specific details about the crime.
Hanemaayer is being represented by lawyer James Lockyer, who recently represented Robert Baltovich who was acquitted for the murder of Elizabeth Bain in April after serving several years in prison for the crime. That case also has an apparent connection to Bernardo.
Hanemaayer is reportedly planning to request that the Ontario Court of Appeal overturn his conviction and clear his name.
