Man’s Attempt To Rob Store With Palm Frond Caught On Tape

O.K. – we admit it. This won’t be the most important story you read on CityNews.ca all day. But it’s probably the one you’re most likely to remember.

It happened in Deland, Florida on Thursday and would at first appear to be your average stick-up at a typical convenience store. But look again. The weapon the robber is brandishing isn’t a gun, a knife or even a blunt object.

It’s a sharpened palm frond.

It appears the crook caught on security video saw an opportunity and decided to carry off the crime with the absurd armament.

That might surprise you. What took place next won’t. As the clerk stands in temporary shock at the nonsensical attack, the suspect – with his shirt pulled over his head – waves the branch in a menacing fashion, threatening to stab the man and shaking the stick in a way that wouldn’t scare a five year old. “Gimme your money!” he screams repeatedly. “Fifty dollars!”

The employee refuses and comes after the idiot, chasing him out with an unconventional weapon of his own – a bar stool. The guy makes one last attempt at a menacing gesture and then flees the store empty handed.

Well, except for the branch.

As if this hapless schnook wasn’t useless enough, the clerk recognized his face and called police. They found him and quickly had him in the palm of their hands – not to mention the palm in his hands.

The Florida man has since been charged with armed robbery.
