Police confirm there’s a link between two brazen shootings that happened just days apart on the same street, killing a teenager and reportedly leaving another young man paralyzed.
Bullets flew on Mornelle Court, in the Morningside Avenue and Ellesmere Road area, around the supper hour Thursday, July 17 hitting and killing 17-year-old Shazad Khawaja. The young man was shot several times and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Five days earlier a 22-year-old man was also shot in the same area. Both crimes happened in an outdoor stairwell and dangerously close to a playground.
When investigators arrived at the scene on Saturday, July 12 they encountered a wall of silence. There were several people who likely witnessed the crime but no one was willing to talk. Local residents have reportedly been more forthcoming with detectives regarding Khawaja’s murder.
Authorities confirmed both victims lived in the area, and were known to police. They also claim the two young men knew each other.
Khawaja’s death marks the city’s 31st homicide of the year.
