Toronto Featured In New Global Version Of Monopoly

If you thought snagging yourself a piece of prime Toronto real estate was a challenging task now, wait until Aug. 26.

That’s when the latest version of the 73-year-old board game Monopoly hits the stores and Toronto is among 22 other cities to be placed on the board of the Here and Now: The World Edition to be released later this week.

Aside from China, Canada is the only other country to have three cities on the board of the new game, with Montreal and Vancouver also up for grabs. The Quebec centre is one of the most expensive spaces on the board, taking the spot previously held by Boardwalk paired with the Latvian capital of Riga.

Vancouver is the flagship piece of property in the orange section and Toronto sits alongside Kyiv and Istanbul in the magenta zone.

The cities included in the updated version of the game were chosen by more than five million people who voted on the cities they wanted to see included in the first-ever global edition of the game.

“We hope that fans of the world’s most popular board game will enjoy buying, selling and trading real estate from around the globe in the new Monopoly game that they created with their votes,” Hasbro vice-president of Global Marketing Helen Martin said in a statement.

“We are thrilled that the first-ever global game board includes an interesting mix of cities that showcases the dynamic cultures, sights and history of the planet.”

Aside from including interesting urban centres, the latest version of Monopoly also boasts some new twists on traditional aspects of the game. Only one railroad exists on the new board with the four others replaced by air, cruise and space travel options.

The Community Chest and Chance cards now allow players to organize global music festivals or attend various cultural events around the world.

Here’s a look at all of the 22 cities included in the newest Monopoly game:

Dark Blue: Montreal, Riga
Green: Cape Town, Belgrade, Paris
Yellow: Jerusalem, Hong Kong, Beijing
Red: London, New York, Sydney
Orange: Vancouver, Shanghai, Rome
Magenta: Toronto, Kyiv, Istanbul
Light Blue: Athens, Barcelona, Tokyo
Brown: Taipei, Gdynia
