Missing Novice Paraglider Found Dead In Lake Simcoe

After an exhaustive search, authorities found the body of a Richmond Hill man who disappeared from a Baldwin, Ont. airport on a paraglider Wednesday evening.

Iqbal Rupani was last seen at the airport near Sutton just before 6:30pm when he took off in a bright-yellow gas-powered paraglider. The 59-year-old was a novice flyer and police believe he may have experienced some mechanical problems with his craft.

The search for the man came to a sad end around 2pm Thursday when authorities found his body in Lake Simcoe, near the town of Georgina.

Paragliders are foot-launched crafts in which the pilot is suspended under the fabric wing.

York Regional Police had asked people in the area around the Baldwin airport to check their properties for any signs of the missing man.  A police helicopter, marine and ATV units were also dispatched to search the area.
