He’s had a lot of successes in his career, but on Friday night, CityNews anchor Gord Martineau was honoured for something that’s especially close to his heart.
Ontario’s Lieutenant-Governor David Onley presented the veteran broadcaster with this year’s Gemini Humanitarian Award – given every year to a member of the television industry who works to improve others’ lives and reduce suffering.
In accepting the award, Martineau thanked his wife, Sharon, and told the crowd at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre how honoured he was.
“I am delighted to be associated with so many charitable initiatives – in particular the Herbie Fund. But the thing that has really spurred me on has been the new and fresh and stepped-up energy on the part of Rogers Communications. They’ve really booted it up to the point where we can get really aggressive with our fundraising.
Tina Cortese, Vice President of News at Citytv praised Martineau for the sincere nature of his humanitarian work.
Gord’s charity work outside the newsroom, it stems from a place that’s real and genuine. And we are so proud to work alongside him every single day. On behalf the CityNews team, Gord, congratuations,” she commented.
Martineau was celebrated for his volunteer work with the Hospital for Sick Children’s Herbie Fund and his commitment to documenting the work of Canadian aid organizations CARE and GlobalMedic.
