There have been scores of accidents all day on GTA streets, but police were fearing the worst at the rush hour – and their fears wound up coming true.
Peel Police are probing what appears to be a weather related collision involving a train, a car and a Brampton Transit bus. It happened around 3:15pm on Torbam Road near Steeles, forcing officials to close a stretch of the busy roadway between the 407 and Derry Road for about an hour.
Cops have now sorted out what happened in the tangled chain of events. The bus, carrying at least 20 passengers, was apparently just heading over the tracks but wasn’t completely out of the way as the train approached. Traffic was slow because of the weather and a car that had stopped behind the transit vehicle wound up trapped on the tracks just as the barrier arms came down.
Those inside realized immediately they were in trouble and managed to scramble out of the vehicle seconds before the freight train came barreling through. The result – the car was torn apart when it was hit by the oncoming locomotive but because those inside got out in time, no one was hurt.
But there was considerable damage to the arms on the track and police fear repairing that will take a long time. They’re asking motorists to stay away from the area for the time being.
It’s the second major crash on a day filled with minor fender benders. Earlier in the afternoon, a massive pile-up closed Highway 400 for a time after a tractor trailer jackknifed and other cars couldn’t stop in time.
