Saturday marked the third installment of the International Bowl, an annual gridiron tilt that brings the ripe tradition of U.S. college football to Toronto in the first days of each New Year and features clubs from the Big East and MAC clashing on the Rogers Centre turf.
This year’s edition welcomed the Cinderella-story Buffalo Bulls led by coaching sensation Turner Gill and the Connecticut Huskies with stud running back Donald Brown (pictured, centre).
More than 40,000 fans from both schools as well as plenty of locals filled the better part of the domed stadium, bringing with them bands, cheerleaders as well as the many other sites and sounds of NCAA pigskin that have made it such a venerable tradition south of the border.
UConn captured this year’s trophy with a 38-20 win, outscoring Buffalo 21-0 in the second half.
Brown, who will enter the NFL draft this spring, ran for 264 yards and a touchdown and earned the game’s MVP honour.
But the final score told but a fraction of the day’s story.
