The rapidly changing temperatures we’ve experienced this winter may be to blame for chunks of concrete crumbling from the Gardiner Expressway.
The pieces came crashing down onto Fort York Boulevard around 2pm Saturday. Luckily, no one was underneath.
Area residents and drivers are expressing concern about the safety of the aging artery and would like to know what is being done about the problem.
“I reported it before Christmas. I phoned and left a message with the City of Toronto about [the fact that] there were pieces falling on the path,” revealed local Duncan Scott.
No one from the city would comment, but officials did say the recent thaw-and-freeze cycle could have something to do with the problem. The concrete infrastructure absorbs water, which turns to ice and expands, forcing it to break apart.
In January 2007, a piece of the Gardiner the size of a basketball fell onto the Lakeshore at York, narrowly missing a car. And a few months later, a similarly-sized piece fell from the Kipling bridge onto the Gardiner.
