Police Retracing Final Hours Of Murdered Restaurateur’s Life

What happened in the hours before George Koutroubis was found dead inside his SUV in Brampton, Ont.?

That’s what police are trying to uncover as they probe the circumstances of the Toronto restaurateur’s murder. Koutroubis, who was the part owner of the Six Steps restaurant near Church and Front Sts., was only days away from going on his honeymoon when he was found slain.

Though Peel Regional Police haven’t yet revealed a cause of death they said the case was being treated as a homicide and that there were obvious signs of trauma to the body.

They also said they were looking into Koutroubis’s life outside work but wouldn’t confirm reports that he facilitated sports bets.

The restaurateur’s BlackBerry went dead last Tuesday, and family members said it was odd that their calls had gone unanswered since he was constantly in contact with relatives and business partners.

They called police the next day. He was found dead on Sunday.

Investigators believe the SUV and Koutroubis’s body were driven to the location.

Loved ones released a statement following his death, saying, “He was the first guy to lend you a hand, pick up a tab, and call to congratulate you on your successes.”

Koutroubis and his new wife Rhoda were to have left this week on their honeymoon, a week-long Caribbean cruise. They were married in late December.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Peel Homicide Squad at 905-453-3311 ext.3205 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
