A Real Bad First Day On The Job At Buckingham Palace

How would you like to be this guy on one of your first days at work? A part time waiter had just been hired for an impressive new gig and his only job was to wheel a cart filled with tea and coffee into a room.

Unfortunately, he spilled the drinks on the carpet, creating a huge stain.

Sounds like a terrible first day or two?

You have no idea.

The carpet was brand new and had only been put in two days before.

It was part of the renovation of a 156 foot-long room and had taken three days to fit properly.

Oh, and did we mention the room was the Picture Gallery in no less a place than Buckingham Palace?

The unnamed servant’s clumsiness wound up costing British taxpayers a whopping Cdn.$107,000, as officials desperately tried to cover up the mess that stretched over an area that’s the size of two tennis courts.

It wasn’t really the hapless schlemiel’s fault. The wheel simply fell off the cart and the drinks followed. But what do you say to excuse yourself when your boss is the Queen of England?

A week-long attempt to get rid of the mess proved useless and in fact repair efforts have made things even worse, allowing the stain to set into the carpet fibres. Even professional cleaners weren’t able to get it out, which likely means another carpet purchase and more lengthy installation trouble.

But at least the man responsible won’t be there to help in the repeat effort. To no one’s surprise, he’s not expected to be invited back.

We can only hope the incident doesn’t leave a permanent stain on his resume, too.
