You know that old expression about April showers and May flowers? If it’s true, get ready for a great growing season next month. This one is ending with another major storm and higher than average precipitation totals.
We usually get about 68.4 millimetres of rain in April. This year’s total will exceed 100 mm. And the month is going out true to form, as a low pressure system brings in a new disturbance that’s expected to hit the GTA during the evening commute.
Light rain started around 3pm amid the threat of heavy downpours at the height of the afternoon rush. Thunderstorms are possible in the evening and showers will linger into Friday.
Winds could also pick up when the system moves in, gusting up to 40-60 kilometres an hour at times.
Toronto is expecting 10-25 mm from this final April storm, with higher amounts in the Niagara Region and lesser totals in cottage country.
Here’s the approx. timeline for the GTA:
4-6pm: Light rain starts, 1-3 mm.
6pm-10pm: Rain becomes heavy at times, 5-15 mm possible.
10pm-1am Friday: Intensity lessens back to light rain, another 1-3 mm.
1am-6pm: Scattered showers, 2-5 mm more.
Highs on Thursday will hit 16C, the norm for this time of year, and we’ll stay close to that mark for the weekend.
But once we get past an overcast and grey Friday, the sun should finally return. And we should finally get an elongated break from the soggy conditions – there’s no more rain in the forecast until Wednesday.
