Name Finally Official As City Unveils “Beach” Signs

There have been many seemingly unsolvable conundrums in the world that have baffled mankind through the ages.

Among them: which came first, the chicken or the egg? How did they build the Pyramids in Egypt? Why do we drive on a parkway and park on a driveway? And who’s the sexier cartoon character, Wilma Flintstone or Betty Rubble?

But now at least we have official proof of one mystery that has lingered for years. The section of Toronto is definitely called “The Beach” and not “The Beaches.” The issue was put to a vote in March 2006 and the former name won.

But it wasn’t until Thursday morning that the City of Toronto finally began putting up new signs along a stretch of Queen St. with “The Beach” name emblazoned on them.

Most think it’s the right choice. “There’s a lot of beaches, but later on, you can call it Kew etc.,” points out historian Gene Domagala. “They refer to it as The Beach and it’s always been like that.”

Still, old habits die hard. While many businesses have changed their names to reflect the new designation, CityNews cameras caught a large number of others that still proudly bear the extra “es” – and they don’t seem anxious to change.
