Archie Finally Proposes To Veronica

It’s one of those questions every teenaged boy has asked at one time or another in their lives – who would you pick if you had the choice: Betty or Veronica? The only man who gets to make that decision, of course, is Archie Andrews, a 70-year-old teenager who still lives in the comic pages in the town of Riverdale.

And now at last it appears he’s made his choice. The company that publishes the comic has created a flurry of headlines around the world with the announcement that the 600th issue will have Archie popping the question.

And the winner appears to be: Veronica. She’s the daughter of Hiram Lodge, the richest man in town.

Betty Cooper is the blonde haired every girl who has long pined for Archie’s affections and stuck by him, despite his never ending pursuit of her closest rival.

The cover of the magazine (top left) shows Archie down on one knee popping the question, while putting a ring on Veronica’s finger. She’s seen saying “yes,” as Betty wipes tears from her eyes peering in from an outside window.

Still, nothing is written in stone in the world of comics and true love never runs smooth. The story is actually the first of a six-parter and there’s no guarantee it will have a happy ending.

Whatever the outcome, it’s already had its desired effect. The strip, which has not had this kind of publicity  since the singing group The Archies took the hit “Sugar Sugar” to number one in 1969,  has been featured in everything from CNN and Entertainment Weekly to – are the Pulitzer Prize judges listening? – the New York Times.

“Although the “Who would Archie choose?” question is always lingering in the back of my mind when I’m reading the Archie comics, to be completely honest, I never really did WANT Archie to actually make up his mind!
