Jewellery Heist In Parking Lot Of Sherway Gardens

Four suspects took off with a million dollars in jewels in a dramatic heist at Sherway Gardens on Friday.

It happened in the parking lot of the west end mall as a jeweller was delivering precious gems to the Birks store mid-morning. The actual theft apparently occurred near another jewellery boutique, Mappins Jewellers, at the back of the shopping centre.

As the jeweller was walking toward the mall from the parking lot, a grayish minivan approached him and stopped. Three men apparently jumped out wearing masks and brandishing guns. The jeweller had a gun held to his head and was instructed to lay face-first on the ground while handing over the valuable merchandise. Fortunately it appears he wasn’t injured, just shaken up.

Marley, 18, was the only witness to the brazen daylight robbery, and she still can’t believe what she saw.

“I was in shock. Like you freeze for a second. What do I do, do I get out or stay in the car or call the cops? You just panic, it was really weird. It was scary,” she recalled.

“I saw three men all wearing like nylons or something over their heads, all dressed in black, a man behind his van. He had a gun. Then two other men surrounding the victim’s car and one of the men had the guy down on the ground.”

The suspects saw her, jumped in the van and took off.

Police are now going over surveillance video in the hopes that it will provide some clues.

Anyone with information can contact police at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
