Electric Cars Get Boost From Province

Dalton McGuinty is betting a new subsidy will get more Ontarians behind the wheel of an electric car.

Speaking at a Toronto dealership on Wednesday, the premier announced the incentive – between $4,000 and $10,000 – for those buying green vehicles like the Chevrolet Volt.

The Michigan-built car will hit the road in 2010, and is expected to cost around $40,000.

The ultimate goal is to make one out of every 20 cars on Ontario roads electric by 2020. Drivers will have access to public charging facilities and parking at provincial government lots and GO Transit stations.

And the green vehicles will also get special licence plates so they can use carpool lanes no matter how many people are in the car.
