RCMP Officer Injured In Kabul Suicide Bombing

An RCMP officer wounded in a suicide bomb attack in Kabul has undergone surgery and is recovering.

Mounties say 55-year-old Sgt. Brian Kelly had just exited his vehicle and was on his way into the entrance of the NATO headquarters when the bomber detonated his vehicle just outside the main gate.

Kelly had to undergo surgery for shrapnel wounds to his legs.

The 29-year RCMP member is based in Ottawa but had just started a nine-month mission in Kabul.

Seven people were killed and more than 90 wounded in Saturday’s attack, which came less than a week before Afghanistan’s presidential election.

An Afghan civilian working for the Canadian embassy was also injured in the blast.
