Missing Man Found, Charged With Mischief

Before he went missing on Saturday, 22-year-old Furqan Muhammad-Haroon was facing charges for allegedly stealing computer equipment from IBM, where he was employed.

His rap sheet just got a bit longer.

Police found Muhammad-Haroon in St Catharines on Tuesday night, and have subsequently charged him with Public Mischief.

Police initially believed he was abducted at gunpoint, after the U of T Engineering student apparently called a cousin, claiming three men were forcing him off the road at gunpoint. Investigators later found his car with the keys in the ignition, but there was sign of Muhammad-Haroon, and his family feared the worst, staging an emotional press conference.

The story soon began to unravel, however.  On Tuesday, Toronto Police admitted they weren’t able to confirm that an abduction had taken place.

“We haven’t been able to confirm (or) get enough evidence to collaborate that in fact he was abducted,” Const. Wendy Drummond said hours before he was detained.

Muhammad-Haroon said another vehicle forced him off the road, but police founds no signs of damage on the car.  They also haven’t been able to track down any witnesses, despite the fact that the alleged incident took place in the middle of the afternoon on a busy Scarborough street.

He’ll be in court to face his latest charges on Wednesday.
