Councillor Calls For Lowered Speed Limit Across Toronto

If a Toronto councillor has his way, drivers across the city will soon be putting on the brakes.

Bill Saundercook wants the posted speed on every road to drop by 10 km/h.

The Parkdale-High Park representative is also proposing a 30 km/h speed limit in high pedestrian zones, such as around Union Station and in school areas.

Saundercook claims that most motorists are already blowing past the recommended limit anyway, telling 680News that he’s seen it on Steeles Avenue and other roads.

“So if you get it down to 50 [kilometres an hour], then it becomes a little bit more tolerable … you are reminding people that they are in a area where there are a lot of cyclists, [a] lot of pedestrians, so they should be acting differently than they would be if they were on a 400-series highway,” he added.

Saundercook said most people think it is acceptable to drive up to 10 kilometres an hour over the speed limit without getting a ticket.

The councillor will be presenting the proposal to the pedestrian committee later in the fall.
