The latest Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan arrived in the country Wednesday for another sad homecoming.
A plane carrying the body of Private Patrick Lormand landed at CFB Trenton, where grieving family and friends were joined by Defence Minister Peter MacKay and Governor General Michaëlle Jean.
A motorcade then made its way along the 401’s Highway of Heroes en route to the coroner’s office downtown.
Lormand, 21, died Sunday when his armoured vehicle struck a roadside bomb southwest of Kandahar City.
He is the 130th Canadian soldier to die in the country’s mission in Afghanistan.
Statement from the family of Private Patrick Lormand:
The family of Private Patrick Lormand would like to express their gratitude for the show of support and kind messages they have received thus far.
Patrick’s parents, Jacques and Sylvie Lormand, said that Patrick was an active young man who loved sports. He enjoyed moto-cross, rock climbing and was an avid soccer player who had played in an organized league in Vankleek Hill, Ontario. Patrick grew up on a farm that has been in his family for generations in the village of Chute-a-Blondeau, Ontario. He attended Hawkesbury District High School and was also a member of 33 Combat Engineer Regiment, an Army Reserve unit located in Ottawa Ontario. He would make the hour long commute twice a week and occasional weekends from Chute-a-Blondeau to Ottawa to participate in unit training. It was during this time where he developed his interest in the military, subsequently joining the Regular Force as an infantryman with the Royal 22nd Regiment, The VanDoos.
Patrick will be laid to rest in the Roman Catholic cemetery behind Saint Joachim Church in Chute-a-Blondeau following a private ceremony for family, friends and colleagues. No words can adequately express the loss of a beloved son.
Patrick’s family and friends wish to remain out of the spotlight during this difficult period. It is requested that the media respect their wishes.
