Mary Travers, of Peter, Paul and Mary, Dead At 72

A woman who was an unforgettable presence – and voice – on the folk music scene has died.

Mary Travers, of Peter, Paul and Mary, passed away on Wednesday. She was 72.

The hugely popular trio – Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey were the other two members – were known for songs like “Leaving on a Jet Plane” and a version of “Blowin’ in the Wind.”

They were also remembered for their involvement in liberal politics, including pushing for racial equality.

Travers, who lived in Connecticut, had battled leukemia for several years. Her spokeswoman said she died of complications relating to a bone-marrow transplant she had several years ago.
