Man Dead, Passenger In Critical Condition Following 401 Crash

A man is dead and his passenger is in critical condition following a crash on Highway 401.
The collision happened in the eastbound lanes near Thickson Road in Whitby early Monday morning.
Investigators say that for some reason, the car was going in reverse when it ran into a transport truck.
The force of the impact pushed the truck over an embankment and the car burst into flames.
The driver was pronounced dead on scene and the passenger was taken to hospital with third-degree burns.
The driver of the truck was not injured.
“In this situation, I don’t know what the reason was, we may never know, why he was backing up on a highway,” outlined OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford.
“Maybe he missed his turn and figured he didn’t want to go to the next exit. We may never know.”
The driver, who is believed to be in his 70s, has not been identified.
