Can Punk Rock And Islam Co-Exist? New Doc Taqwacore Says Absolutely

It started with the fictional work of a young Muslim convert, but Taqwacore – a term which combines the Islamic idea of divine consciousness with North American creation hardcore punk – is a very real and not altogether new phenomenon and the subject of a new documentary by Montreal filmmaker Omar Majeed.

The film follows several North American youths, each inspired in his own way by Michael Muhammad Knight’s book The Taqwacores, as they travel the U.S. and Pakistan, not proselytizing but rather searching for their own place in Islam.

The film is inspiring, troubling, funny and above all else enlightening.

It’s also refreshingly honest, choosing not to paint the subjects as innocents or mask their hypocrisy, but rather show them for the mixed up but well-meaning misfits they can’t help but be.

CityNews.ca sat down with Omar Majeed to talk about the film. See the interview below.
