Budget Cuts Are Coming, Premier Warns

Just days after he announced that funding for all-day kindergarten had climbed by nearly half a billion dollars, Premier Dalton McGuinty warned that budget cuts are coming to Ontario.

Finance Minister Dwight Duncan will be starting his pre-budget consultations shortly to decide where the fat can be trimmed – and by how much.

The deficit for 2009-2010 is now $24.7 billion, far above the predicted $14.1 billion shortfall.

The all-day kindergarten program is expected to cost $1.5 billion.

Duncan has indicated that he may eliminate entire programs rather than make general cuts across all programs.
