Snow-Rain Mix Could Make For Bad Morning Commute Wed.

Be prepared for a messy commute Wednesday morning.

Environment Canada is tracking a weather system currently moving its way into Nevada that could possibly create some traffic headaches here in a few days.

The city’s first significant snowfall could happen early Wednesday and as temperatures climb through the morning that snow will turn to rain, possibly leading to slippery roads during the early commute.

Approximately five to 10 centimetres of snow is expected to fall starting around 4am Wednesday. Then, temperatures are forecast to rise and 15 to 20 millimetres of rain will follow the snowfall around 6am.

Winds are also expected to kick up Wednesday morning.

Toronto Police Driving Tips

Equipment
Tires: whether you are opting for winter, snow or all-season tires, ensure they are in good condition, properly inflated and there is adequate tread depth.
Battery: have your vehicle’s electrical system and battery level checked to ensure adequate cold weather starts.
Wipers: change worn or broken blades
Washer fluid: reservoir should be filled, with an extra jug of fluid in the trunk.
Booster cables: a set of cables is great insurance to help not only yourself, but others.
Snow brush/scraper: a long-handled brush and scraper are essential for clearing your entire vehicle of snow and ice.
Extras: food, water, blanket, winter boots, gloves, hat.

Driving
Avoid any unnecessary trips.
Slow down since driving slower allows more time for reaction and reduces stopping distances.
Look well beyond where you are and use mirrors to be aware of your surroundings.
Identify possible hazards well in advance.
Drive within the limits of the environment, your ability and the equipment you have.
Evaluate the need for driving, changing environmental conditions and road conditions.
Avoid driving while wearing heavy boots, gloves and coats. Carry these items with you but the size of these items can hinder your ability to feel the controls and limit your movement.
