The race to replace Toronto Mayor David Miller is heating up.
Toronto City Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti officially entered the race for the mayor’s seat by filing his nomination papers at the City Hall elections office, Tuesday.
Mammoliti is pushing for a tax on prostitution, tougher crime fighting and a floating casino.
At a media briefing, he recalled that 13 years ago, the year before amalgamation, he issued a warning about the megacity ballooning into a monster he called “godzilla.”
“All the leaders since have ridden on the monster’s tail. Godzilla [has] quite frankly run rampant in the city, and I think it is time to tame godzilla. I think I’m the person to do that,” Mammoliti said.
Mammoliti has his council seat to fall back on. If he can’t raise the enough money to run an effective mayoral campaign, he can bow out and run for councillor.
The deadline for nominations is September 10, which is 45 days before the October 25 election.
Mammoliti joins Rocco Rossi as the only serious contenders to make it legal.
Mammoliti has been the city councillor for Ward 7 – York West for the past 15 years. He was also the chair of the Affordable Housing Committee, the Toronto Zoo Board, as well as a member of the city’s executive committee.
