Toronto Centre voters to pick replacement for George Smitherman on Feb. 4

Premier Dalton McGuinty is wasting no time in moving to replace former deputy premier George Smitherman.

McGuinty has called a byelection for February 4 in Toronto Centre to replace Smitherman, who resigned last weekend as a member of provincial parliament to take a run at the Toronto mayor’s chair.

The Liberals will formally nominate former Winnipeg mayor Glen Murray as their candidate at a meeting tonight in the downtown Toronto riding.

Well-known nurse Cathy Crowe will run for the New Democrats in Toronto Centre, long considered a Liberal stronghold.

The Progressive Conservatives plan to nominate their candidate next week, but no names have surfaced publicly.

Under Ontario’s Election Act, elections must be called on a Wednesday and held the fifth Thursday after the date of the issue of the writ.
