It was a long night for a group of Markham residents and the firefighters who put out a gas-line blaze after six hours.
A natural gas leak caused an explosion around 8:30pm Tuesday on Natasha Way, near Sixteenth and Woodbine avenues. The entire neighbourhood was evacuated to a nearby church as a precaution as crews battled the fire.
“It was a really loud boom,” described homeowner Annissa Lall. “I looked out and the sky went yellow and I saw flames coming down.”
Lall hadn’t realized the danger, considering the gas line simply an eyesore. Luckily the damage was relatively minor.
Her insurance company estimates damage to the inside of the house at about $30,000 and crews were still working to repair the gas line into the day.
