Mild Winter Will Continue Thanks To El Nino

It looks like the mild January weather in some parts of the country is going to be around for the rest of the winter.

Environment Canada’s senior climatologist David Phillips says we’ve reached the dead of winter, yet many Canadians may be asking, what winter?

Despite the storm hitting parts of the Prairies this weekend, Phillips says many other parts of the country have experienced a lengthy January thaw.

He says Toronto temperatures are expected to reach 9 degrees Celcius on Sunday, while Ottawa will go up to 6 on Monday.

Phillips says it’s because of El Nino, and it’s likely the rest of this winter will be milder than normal across all of the west and north, and near normal seasonal temperatures across Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada.

He says it won’t be balmy every day, but we’ll see a mixed bag of cold days, warm days, some snow and some dry periods.

Phillips says in terms of precipitation, it will be normal, to drier than normal, across the country.
