Toyota Recall Continues

The recall of eight Toyota car and truck models has shut down production at several Ontario plants.

Not only is the company taking the vehicles off the market, they’ve stopped the sale of any new, affected, cars.

Drivers have reported ‘sticking’ gas pedals. The accelerators in question are manufactured in Mississauga by the Indiana-based CTS Corporation.

Premier Dalton McGuinty said that though the decision hurts the province’s workers in the short term, the company did the responsible thing. He added that Toyota has a “bright future” in Ontario.

There are 2.3 million vehicles in the U.S. and about 270,000 in Canada involved in the recall, which was announced last week.

Owners of the vehicles are asked to bring them in to the dealer for a test.

“We’ve had a lot of calls, and we’re booking them as fast as we can,” said Ron Provost, director of operations for Toyoto on Front.

“This is not something that’s going to happen suddenly. Anybody that’s driving the car is going to feel the pedal ratcheting more than just being easily depressed and easily returned,” he added.

The affected vehicles are: 2009-2010 RAV4, the 2009-2010 Corolla, the 2009-2010 Matrix, the 2005-2010 Avalon, the 2007-2010 Camry, the 2010 Highlander, the 2007-2010 Tundra and the 2008-2010 Sequoia.

Update: Late on Wednesday evening, Toyota announced it was recalling an additional 1.09 million vehicles in the United States because of problems with the floor mats.
