Charges Against Fantino Withdrawn

Charges against Ontario’s top cop dating back to 2007 have been withdrawn.

OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino was accused of attempting to influence municipal officials during the Caledonia land disputes.

Gary McHale alleged that Fantino sent emails to public servants in Caledonia, telling them not to attend McHale’s rallies.

The Crown withdrew those charges on Wednesday morning.

“As previously stated, I have the utmost respect for and confidence in the judicial system and am content that this vexatious allegation was dealt with in a just and appropriate manner,” Fantino wrote in a press release.

“I remain proud of the difficult work done by the OPP over the last several years in Caledonia. Our efforts have resulted in a relative calm and minimized potential violence. The results speak for themselves,” he said.

McHale said he plans to take his charges to the Supreme Court.
